The first hydroelectric plant in Manitoba was built in 1900 on the Little Saskatchewan River (then called Minnedosa River). Between 1906 and 1954, seven dams were built on the Winnipeg River. Until remote northern dams became possible, these Winnipeg River dams were central to the province's energy system. These dams are in the Sagkeeng First Nation territory. Six of the Winnipeg River dams are still in operation. Photos: Winnipeg River, Sagkeeng First Nation, and the Minnedosa River Plant. |
