WWF-Canada is calling for fishing reforms that would result in more sustainable Grand Banks fisheries practices at the annual North Atlantic Fisheries Organization (NAFO) meeting in Dartmouth, September 18-22, 2006.
The conservation organization recently released a report directed specifically at the North Atlantic Fisheries Organizations, which outlines reforms NAFO nations could undertake to solve the bycatch problem by changing to a more holistic way of managing fisheries. 'Bycatch' is the name for marine species caught in fishing gear intended for other species. The report follows-up on WWF-Canada's 2005 report that showed how NAFO nations were excessively catching species-at-risk such as cod through bycatch.
