Protected Areas Needed in the ÔHeart of the BorealÕ

The ÔHeart of the BorealÕ is a boreal forest region (Eastern Manitoba, Northwestern Ontario) of international ecological significance as one of the remaining areas of intact boreal forest in the world. It is also home to many First Nation communities who have been using and managing these lands for centuries. Manitoba Wildlands, along with other conservation groups and some First Nation communities, is committed to establishment of new protected areas in the ÔHeart of the BorealÕ. However, this also requires the cooperation of the provincial governments of Manitoba and Ontario. You can help. Please tell Manitoba Minister of Conservation, Stan Struthers, that you support the establishment of protected areas in these boreal forest regions.

Dear Minister Struthers; Re: Protected Areas Needed in the 'Heart of the Boreal' I urge you to protect the heart of Canada's boreal forest in Manitoba. Our boreal forests are a magnificent natural treasure held in trust not only for all Manitobans, but for all citizens of this world. I am concerned that, unless you act now to fulfill the provincial government commitment to complete our networks of protected areas, ManitobaÕs boreal forests will be sacrificed to development stemming from Canadian and U.S. demand for energy and wood products. We know that the Natural Resources Defense Council is also concerned about this issue and their members and supporters are sending you letters appealing for protection of the boreal forest in Manitoba. Protecting the boreal forest is critical to sustaining our continent's shared heritage of forests, waterways and wildlife -- and to maintaining Manitoba and Canada's position as a leader in combating global warming. It is also crucial to the health and livelihood of the many First Nation and Aboriginal people who call the boreal home. Decisions about the future Manitoba's boreal forest should be based on the conservation and community needs for these boreal regions ecosystem and commitments of your government to establish protected areas. I urge your government to seize this unique opportunity to save the boreal forest by completing a network of protected areas in this region.
