Protected Areas Needed in the ÔHeart of the BorealÕThe ÔHeart of the BorealÕ is a boreal forest region (Eastern Manitoba, Northwestern Ontario) of international ecological significance as one of the remaining areas of intact boreal forest in the world. It is also home to many First Nation communities who have been using and managing these lands for centuries. Manitoba Wildlands, along with other conservation groups and some First Nation communities, is committed to establishment of new protected areas in the ÔHeart of the BorealÕ. However, this also requires the cooperation of the provincial governments of Manitoba and Ontario. You can help. Please tell Manitoba Minister of Conservation, Stan Struthers, that you support the establishment of protected areas in these boreal forest regions. Please fill in the information below and send a letter today! Modify the letter and add your own comments if you wish. The Natural Resources Defense Council, a U.S. - based conservation organization, also recognizes the ecological significance of this region and has identified it as a BioGem. NRDC is mobilizing their members to take action. Please consider sending the manitoba wildlands letter below. Then view the NRDC site at www.nrdc.org to participate in their ÔHeart of the BorealÕ campaign. |
